12-year-old student charged after alleged threat at Dunnellon Middle School

A 12-year-old student who allegedly wrote a threat in a textbook has been arrested in an unfounded school shooting plot at Dunnellon Middle School.

A Marion County Sheriff’s Office school resource officer learned that the student had written “I planned a school shooting. It is going to happen on 3-29-17,” in a textbook.

A thorough investigation found no evidence to support these allegations, but MCSO increased deputy presence on campus Wednesday.

During the investigation, a 12-year old female student was developed as the suspect who made the threat. After interviewing her, she admitted to writing the note and making the threat in an effort to “be cool.” Deputies determined that she had no malicious intent to harm anyone on school campus. She has been charged with disruption of a school function, which is a second degree misdemeanor. Because the juvenile was arrested for a misdemeanor, her identity is not public information, per Florida Public Record Law Chapter 119.
