A 16-year-old Summerfield driver was ticketed in the accident Tuesday afternoon which injured country music entertainer Margo Smith of the Village of Chatham.
Zachary Trawinski of Summerfield was cited for failure to yield after his vehicle collided with a two-door Mercedes driven by Smith, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
She had been westbound on County Road 42 near the Mulberry Grove shopping plaza in The Villages when the two vehicles collided.
Both Trawinski and Smith were originally transported to The Villages Regional Hospital, but then Smith was transferred to Ocala Regional Medical Center. She suffered a shattered wrist, broken ankle and multiple bruises, according to her husband, Richard Cammeron. But there was no brain damage as had been originally feared.
She had surgery Thursday and is reportedly doing well.
Smith, who was known as “the Tennessee Yodeler,” rose to fame in the 1970s and 1980s with hits like “Little Things Mean A Lot,” “It Only Hurts For A Little While,” and “Don’t Break The Heart That Loves You.” She performed regularly at the Ryman Auditorium and Grand Ole Opry.
