A 17-year-old died of gunshot wounds after a shooting on Thursday at a Leesburg apartment complex.
At approximately 5 p.m., the Leesburg Police Department responded to the area of the Laurel Oaks Apartment Complex on Sleepy Hollow Road, in reference to an apparent shooting.
While responding, police were advised the victim was picked up by a passerby and taken to the Lowe’s parking lot where he received treatment from EMS.
The victim, Elian R. Hughes, suffered two apparent gunshot wounds, one to the hand and one to the abdomen. He was airlifted to Orlando Regional Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery. He later died.
Detectives identified 17-year-old Mohyjah A. King as the primary suspect and subsequently arrested him shortly thereafter, without incident.
The initial charge of aggravated battery will now be upgraded to homicide.
