19-year-old dies in car crash in Gilchrist County

A 19-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene following a car crash Friday 10:35 p.m. in Gilchrist County.

Andrew Griffith of High Springs was driving northbound on State Road 47, just south of the Gilchrist/Columbia County line, in a 1998 Chevy tracker without a seatbelt, according to an accident report from Florida Highway Patrol.

After failing to successfully negotiate a long right curvature in the roadway, Griffith attempted to sharply steer back to the left to re-enter the roadway, causing his vehicle to swerve and travel across both lanes of the roadway and into the direct path of a 2006 Dodge Ram traveling southbound driven by Jonathan Harville of Branford.

Griffith was ejected from his vehicle and came to his final resting position along the grassy shoulder of SR-47, the report stated. Columbia County Life Guard paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced Griffith dead at 10:49 p.m due to fatal injuries.
