A $2 flasher or a $5 flashlight could save your life

To the Editor:

I am writing in response, and total agreement, to the letter to the editor this morning regarding safe walking. I usually walk early in the morning, before sun up, and often in the evening after sundown. I am always amazed by the number of people I encounter who are wearing dark clothing, and not using flashers, reflective clothing, or flashlights. I wear a flasher in front, and one in back.   I also usually carry a flashlight (always turned on), to light my way so I don’t trip on unseen obstacles. I want to always be well lighted so that cars and golf carts can see me, especially on residential streets where there are no sidewalks.  I also always walk facing traffic when there is no sidewalk (which is, I believe, the law). I want to see cars coming towards me, to be sure the car is going around me. I cannot see what is behind me and I don’t know if the car driver sees me.    My question to those who refuse to light themselves up is –  Why would you not want to make yourself safer? Are you willing to bet your life that the cars will see you? Would you let your grandchildren walk in the dark, in dark clothing, with nothing to make them visible to oncoming cars? A $2 flasher and a $5 flashlight could save your  life.
