20-year-old ATV driver in critical condition following accident

A 20-year-old ATV driver is in critical after striking a fire hydrant Friday evening in Hillsborough County.

Ricardo Ramirez, 20, of Ruskin was riding a 2003 Yamaha ATV northbound on the outside shoulder of U.S. 301 north of Brody Boulevard when he collided with a fire hydrant located on the outside shoulder of the roadway, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report. His ATV then collided with a utility pole, ejecting him from the vehicle, the report stated.

Ramirez was critically injured and transported to Tampa General Hospital.

He had not been wearing a helmet.
