Nervous residents fear expansion of sinkholes in Village of Calumet Grove

Residents and public safety officials are keeping a close eye on a trio of sinkholes in the Village of Calumet Grove.

Residents of the 17000 block of McLawren Terrace were startled by a loud bang shortly after 3 a.m. Tuesday.

After public safety employees inspected the homes, two were declared unfit for habitation.

The 8th and 9th holes at Torri Pines were closed at the Nancy Lopez golf course as a result of the sinkholes.

The largest of the three holes was about 35 foot deep by 18 feet across, according to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

There was some fear Thursday evening that the sinkhole might be moving under the street.

In addition to neighbors, public safety officials and curious residents, Orlando media descended on the scene.

Yellow tape blocked access to the homes on McLawern Terrace.

The granddaddy of all sinkholes in The Villages appeared on Easter weekend in the Village of Buttonwood in 2014.
