$35.7-million project to connect The Villages to Villages of Southern Oaks, Village of Fenney

Buena Vista Boulevard will be extended about four miles south to connect State Road 44 to County Road 468, which runs past the Village of Fenney.

The $35.7-million multi-lane road extension will connect the Villages of Southern Oaks, Village of Fenney and other communities south of SR 44 with The Villages.

Details of the proposed state road project were presented Tuesday night to the Sumter County Board of Commissioners.

The project timetable calls for planning development, including a feasibility study, project development and an environmental study to be completed this year. Design and right-of-way acquisition would be done in 2018 with construction in 2019.

Other planned communities that could be served by the road would include Lake Panasoffkee Preserve, Cresswind, Landstone Development, Monarch Ranch Industrial Park, The Villages Industrial Development and Secret Promise DRI.

The estimated construction cost is $29.7 million with $3 million earmarked for design and $1 million for right-of-way acquisition. The project is not eligible for federal transportation funds.

Buena Vista Boulevard currently begins at State Road 42 at The Villages north end, extending south past County Road 466 and County Road 466A to terminate at SR 44 near Brownwood.

In other business, the board celebrated the accreditation of the county’s fire service, but also approved a plan to outsource fire inspection services effective Sept. 30 and lay off some employees. Of the nation’s 30,000 fire services, Sumter County is one of 200 to receive accreditation.
