76-year-old woman killed by own vehicle as she attempts to close gate

A 76-year-old woman was killed by own vehicle as she attempted to close a gate at her home.

Marilyn Simpkins was attempting to close a gate at her home in Paisley at 3:15 p.m. Sunday when she put the 2006 Chevy SUV in reverse instead of park and she was struck by the car’s open door, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

She was lying in the driveway when a Lake County sheriff’s deputy arrived at the scene. Simpkins was able to tell the deputy what happened.

She was transported to Florida Hospital in Deland where she later died.
