92-year-old Villager falls for ‘Publishers Clearing House’ scam

A 92-year-old Villager is out $399.99 after she fell for a scam from a caller who identified himself as being with Publishers Clearing House.

The woman received the call Aug. 31 at her home on the Historic Side of The Villages, according to an incident from the Lady Lake Police Department.

The caller told the woman she had won a car and money and told her she needed to send a cashier’s check for $399.99 to an address in West Lake Village, Calif. She was told that the car would arrive later that week.

Instead of a car, she received another call. This time the caller told her another $600 was needed to receive the prize. The woman told her daughter what had occurred and the daughter told her mother not to send any more money.

The woman reported the incident to police on Sept. 9.
