Abandoned dog found with note: ‘My family couldn’t afford me’

This note was on the dog's collar.

The note tagged to his collar broke Villager Joanie Cady’s heart.

“My family couldn’t afford me,” the note read.

The dog was discovered wandering in the Village of Virginia Trace a week ago.

It launched Cady’s mission to find the dog a home.

The dog is about 1 to 3 years old, about 25 pounds and has been well groomed and trained. His ears are clean, nails trim, good weight, clean coat, friendly and loving. Cady describes him as quiet and very gentle. He comes when called, sits when told, wags his tail and gives kisses, she said.

“It’s sad to think his family had to give him up. I don’t like the way they did it, but maybe they didn’t have a choice,” Cady said.

What Cady would learn next, only made her sadder.

“We tried to take him to the Humane Society, but found out they do not take animals directly from people, they rescue only from Animal Control if they have room,” she said.

Animal Control destroys the animal nine days after taking it in, she added.

For the moment, Joanie and George Cady are fostering the dog in their home in The Villages.

But they are hoping someone will take the dog.
