The Department of Children and Families and law enforcement are investigating a report that a woman with dementia turned over $1 million to a man she met at an assisted living facility in The Villages.
Lady Lake police were called to Atria Senior Living Facility on County Road 466 on Nov. 23 where they met with a DCF agent to review the case which began in 2013.
The woman with dementia met the man at Sumter Place Assisted Living Facility on County Road 466A in The Villages, according to an incident report from the Lady Lake Police Department. She willingly gave the man permission to move all of her money – $1 million – out of her account. The man bought a house in The Villages but also continued to pay the woman’s bills, the report indicated.
The woman’s daughter obtained a power of attorney, but the woman has resisted her daughter’s attempt to assert herself into her affairs, according to the report.
“I can make my own decisions, but I don’t know if they’re right or wrong,” the woman told police.
She added she does not want her daughter to manage her affairs.
The daughter is working with a lawyer, according to the report.
The case was turned over to Sumter County law enforcement.
