The Veterans Memorial Park of the Villages continued a 20-year tradition of holding Memorial Day ceremonies at the park in Spanish Springs on Monday morning.

The VMP staff  produced a meaningful program filled with ceremony and substance.

Ret. U.S. Navy Capt. Jerry Sexsmith was the guest speaker preceded by an opening that included the VMP Honor Guard, the presentation of the Armed Forces Flags and the presentation of Organization Flags.

Twelve organizations were represented including the Military order of the Purple Heart, Tri-County Women Veterans and Organization of Disabled Vets.

Judy Pendleton, US Navy 62-66, carried the flag for the women veterans.

“I was a little nervous at first, hadn’t done this since I was in the military. Then I relaxed and really enjoyed the moment,” said Pendleton.

One of the main participants of the program was not even seen by many attending. VMP drummer Bob Bienvenue did an excellent job throughout the program.

Sexsmith noted in his remarks that since the Revolutionary War 1.5 million American men and women have given their lives, given up their tomorrows so that we can enjoy our todays.

“They didn’t live long enough to become veterans,” said Sexsmith.

Outgoing VMP secretary Charlaine Zopfl was given an award commemorating her five-years of service. “I want to thank all of the loyal attendees at this program and for your support at our many past programs,” said Zopfl. “The members of VMP give their all to do these programs and I am just glad to have been a part of it.”

This was the first time Glen and Bonnie Hartig, new to The Villages, had visited the park and attended a program.

“I thought it was great, so meaningful,” said Bonnie.

“We have noticed how dedicated people in The Villagers are to the country. Not that people aren’t in other places, but we just really notice it here. It was wonderful to see all the veterans here today,” she said.

Wanda and Ed Frappier have attended many of the Memorial Day programs at the park.

“We really like the flags and the ceremonial aspect of the programs,” she said.
