Ashland Pond was the scene of a series of races featuring the laser class radio-controlled model sailboats.
Villager Alan Perkins said that 23 boats competed in Sunday’s regatta which was one leg of the southern race series. Three Villagers – Perkins, David Brawner, and Jim Rutherford competed in Saturday’s St. Petersburg race. Brawner came in first in the gold fleet, Perkins was second in the gold fleet and Rutherford came in first in the silver fleet.Â
A number Villagers will be competing in the remaining races. They are scheduled in Naples, Punta Gorda and will finish up with a two day regatta in Marco Island.
All the boats which raced Sunday are identical. They all have one sail and are exactly the same size. This sailboat class is fairly affordable, according to Perkins.
Many of the competitors travel considerable distances to race their boats. Brawner raced last month in the Bahamas. He indicated one of the advantages of this class of boat is that it is easy to transport, by car or if flying.
Conditions were ideal for the race on Sunday. The crowd of spectators at Ashland Pond numbered near 100 people. Some were just curious Villagers while others were enthusiasts and all enjoyed the spectacle.
Ashland Pond is used by members of the Villages Model Yacht Squadron to practice on a regular basis. Spectators are always welcome.
