Bank officials plead with Villager to stop sending money to suspected scammers

Citizens First Bank officials have pleaded with a 74-year-old Village of Mira Mesa man to stop sending money to suspected scammers, but apparently have not had much luck.

Lady Lake police were called Nov. 25 to the bank on Main Street in Spanish Springs where they met with with the Villager who had sent $7,960 to people who had called on his cell phone indicating they were from the lottery commission and Publishers’ Clearinghouse. The transactions took place from July through Nov. 17. He sent the money through Western Union and direct deposit.

Citizens First Bank had contacted the man several times, indicating it was a scam and to stop sending the money, according to the police report. The man did it anyway.

Police were unable to take action as it was determined the man was doing this of his own free will.
