Bank robbery suspect shot while attacking female staffer at Ocala Regional Medical Center

A bank robbery suspect who was threatening hospital staff with a pair of scissors was shot by a police officer Wednesday night at Ocala Regional Medical Center.

The suspect, who has not been identified, fell after he was arrested for attempting to rob the Bank of America branch on State Road 40, according to a statement from the Ocala Police Department. The suspect was transported to ORMC.

Around 11:54 p.m. while medical personnel were trying to X-ray the suspect, he attacked a female hospital staff member and grabbed a pair of scissors from a desk in the exam room.  The suspect failed to comply with the an Ocala Police Department officer’s verbal commands and threatened the medical staff and the officer with the scissors.

The officer shot the suspect, who is expected to live.  The hospital staff members suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.  The suspect remains hospitalized recovering from a gunshot wound and will be transported into the Marion County Jail once he is released.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the officer involved shooting.
