Burton “Burt” Howard Shannon, age 89, of Lady Lake, FL, passed away on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Cornerstone Hospice House in The Villages, FL. He was born to Earlton C. and Bertha L. (Denton) Shannon on August 10, 1927 in Longview, WA. He married Elaine Virginia Knox on March 28, 1948 in Neatso, OR at his grandmother’s home. Burton was a WWII Marine Veteran. He joined the Marines when he was 17 and served as part of a Sherman Tank crew. Burton worked as a Civil Servant for the US Air Force for 32 years. He became Chief of Ground Safety and retired in 1982 from Scott Air Force Base in Belleville, IL. He and Elaine moved to The Villages, FL in 1989 to play their favorite pastime, Golf. He also enjoyed painting pictures of birds for family and friends. He was a member of American Legion # 347 of Lady Lake, FL.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years Elaine V. Shannon of The Villages, FL; daughters Roxana (Ray Marek) Shannon of Swansea, IL and Candice (Jack) Pensoneau of Prairie du Rocher, IL; daughter in law Kim Shannon of Great Falls, MT; grandchildren Scott, Josh, Lori, Andrew and Jennifer; and 20 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Lance Thomas Shannon and grandson Heath Alan Shannon.
A memorial gathering will take place at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Services, 1511 Buenos Aires Blvd, The Villages, FL on Thursday, April 13, 2017 from 10am to 11 a.m. A committal service with military honors will take place at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL on Thursday, April 13, 2017 at 12:30 p.m.
