A 38-year-old Village of Calumet Grove man is facing his fifth drunk driving charge after he was found unresponsive in a golf cart early Tuesday morning.

Sumter County sheriff’s deputies were called at 1:37 a.m. to the golf cart path near the intersection of El Camino Real and Enrique Drive.

Chad E. Basford, who lives on SE 80th Bellavista Circle, was found in a blue EZ-Go golf cart with the headlights and taillights activated. After the deputy woke up Basford, he admitted that he had consumed six Yuengling beers and a shot of whiskey at Gator’s Dockside in Spanish Springs, the arrest report indicated.

He failed field sobriety exercises. He refused to provide a breath sample and said he wanted a lawyer.

Basford has four previous DUI convictions. They were in 1995, 2010, 2013 and 2014. You can read about his 2014 arrest HERE. As a result of that arrest, he was sentenced to one year’s probation and his driver’s license was suspended for six months.
