Card-access gate work at site of controversial ‘Wall’ now nearly complete

Work continued Friday on the installation of a card-access gate off Paradise Drive on the Historic Side of The Villages.

A stop sign had been erected Friday night at the site and golf cart traffic through the site was cut to one lane for at least part of the day.

Stanley D. Kustron Jr. of Stonecrest has relied on the golf cart path for years to get to medical appointments.

“I travel to the VA Clinic at Mulberry regularly. I go there now more than I used to because they have a lot more services.

I think it’s a tragedy that it’s come to this over some petty argument,” said Kustron a disabled Vietnam veteran.

Residents of the Historic Side still refer to the site as “The Wall,” as memories are still raw from the overnight appearance of a barricade at the site on Aug. 10. “The Wall” touched off protests, including a rally Aug. 12 in downtown Spanish Springs Town Square.

The wall was dismantled on Aug. 16.

The Village Center Community Development District approved on Oct. 9 an agreement for gate maintenance.
