Charles A. Black, 90, of Summerfield, FL, passed from this life to return to his heavenly home on January 13, 2017. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in the Lord supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace.
He was born in the Bronx, NY. Charles served his country with distinction as an Army veteran of World War II. Charles participated in the Rhineland campaign and was wounded in action February 21, 1945. He received the Purple Heart as well as the EAMETO Ribbon with Device; 1 Battle Star on EAMETO Ribbon and Combat Infantry Badge.
Following his military service he went to college at SUNY Plattsburgh, NY.
He began his career in education as an English teacher at Northeast School, Brentwood, NY and became principal of both the Northeast and Southeast Schools in Brentwood.
He was a life-long Kiwanian serving in numerous capacities including president.
Charles was a talented athlete playing basketball, tennis and racquetball. He excelled at bowling consistently having an average over 200.
Charles moved to Summerfield with his wife Barbara in 2005. He volunteered to assist the developmentally challenged and disabled in Port Charlotte, FL for several years. He enjoyed playing cards, especially Bridge and was a member of the American Legion Post #284 of Belleview, FL.
Besides his parents Lincoln and Gladys (Robinson) Black he was predeceased by a son, Terrence, sister, Gertrude and brother, Edward.
Charles leaves his beloved wife of 42 years, Barbara (Moran) Black; children, Gary, Gregory, Geoffrey, Lauren and Christopher; step-children, Stanley, Karen, Diana and Richard as well as 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, Summerfield, FL on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 10 a.m. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL.
In lieu of flowers memorial contribution in his memory may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject.org), St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN (stjude.org) or Spina Bifida Association of America (spinabifidaassociation.org).
