Charles ‘Charlie’ Edward Demerau, The Villages, Florida, died peacefully at home on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2015 at the age of 81. Charlie was born and raised in Standish, Michigan, and as a young man served in the military on foreign soil. He was married to Judith E Dunkel in 1957 in Port Huron, Michigan, where they raised their two sons, and where Charlie worked for Bell Telephone. They later moved to Atlanta where Charlie enjoyed retirement, fishing and boating on Lake Lanier and where he also deepened his Christian walk. In early 2000, Charlie decided that he and his wife Judy should move to an amazing retirement community he had heard of called The Villages, where they ended up living happily ever after. Anyone who knew Charlie was infected by his charm and good looks. Charlie lived life to the fullest, was a wonderful father and grandfather, and stayed active playing nine holes almost every day with Judy. Village life was perfect for his social personality with close friends and family always visiting. His neighbors have donned the nickname of “Mayor” for him. Charlie’s positive outlook on life and strong faith in God has touched everyone he meets, and has truly been an inspiration to his family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Hiers-Baxley Funeral Home in The Villages on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 11 a.m. Viewing will be from 10 – 11 a.m. A processional will follow immediately to Florida National Cemetery, where a ceremony with military honors will take place at 1 p.m. for those who would like to be present. Charlie is survived by his wife Judy, their two sons Charles “Chic” Demerau and Larry “Scott” Demerau, daughter-in-law Julia Demerau, and his beloved dog Buffy. Charlie is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as two nieces in Albuquerque, New Mexico and one nephew in Dallas, Texas. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to: Villagers for Hospice, 601 Casa Bella, The Villages, FL 32162. Please make checks payable to Villagers for Hospice.
