Rosemary Pilonero, chorus director of Villages Elementary of Lady Lake conducted 34 students on Saturday at American Legion Post 347. The students performed at the Villages Honor Flight Flightless Flight sendoff, marked as the largest attendance to date in 59 missions.
American Legion Auxiliary Unit 347 Americanism chair Donna McGlone spoke with the children on posting of the colors by the American Legion Post 347 Honor Guard and flag etiquette.
“Stand, face the flag, remove caps with your right hand holding cap and hand over your heart. Girls wearing unisex hats (ball caps) must remove them also. There is no talking as we show our respect for the flag our veterans fought to protect our freedoms. We show the same respect when the National Anthem is sung,” McGlone told the students.
Many students and participants were not aware of the term, “Hallowed Ground.” When the colors are posted, the area between the flags is respected space in honor of the veterans who have paid the ultimate price. You may not walk through the area or pass items through the area. The children were shown how to exit the stage without breaking hallowed ground.
