Lady Lake commissioners have aired concerns about the future of the U.S. Post Office on the Historic Side of The Villages.
The Villages has proposed a complete makeover of La Plaza Grande North. It would include the demolition and reconstruction of the buildings, including the building which houses the Post Office.
However, Commissioner Paul Hannan at Monday’s commission meeting noted the existing building is 4,500 square feet while the new building would be 1,000 square feet.
He warned the future of the full-service Post Office could be in jeopardy, and he is fearful of the impact that could have on the 9,000 residents of the Historic Side.
Hannan said many of those residents travel only by golf cart and if the full-service Post Office goes away, those residents would be negatively impacted.
Hannan said that in an email, Marty Dzuro of The Villages said it is “too early” to tell what services the U.S. Post Office would provide at the downsized facility.
Commissioner Ruth Kussard said she was concerned about the entrance to the parking lot of the proposed building. She said having only one way in and out could be problematic, “particularly in November and December,” when residents would be mailing holiday packages.
