Damage at new card-access gate at ‘Wall’ site investigated

Damage at the site of the new card-access gate off Paradise Drive on the Historic Side of The Villages is being investigated.

Community Watch and a Sumter County sheriff’s deputy were on the scene this afternoon.

The gate was damaged prior to 2 p.m. Monday.

It appeared a golf cart might have done the damage.

The new card-access gate became operational on Nov. 7.

This was the site of the now infamous “Berlin Wall” controversy this summer.

The Village Center Community Development District approved on Oct. 9 an agreement for gate maintenance.

“The Wall” went up in the wee hours of Aug. 10 and set off a firestorm of protests, including a rally Aug. 12 in downtown Spanish Springs Town Square.

The wall was dismantled on Aug. 16.
