THURSDAY’S SCHEDULE
#2 KNICKS AT #1 WARRIORS
The winner will be the division champion. If the Warriors win, they will finish 17-5, two games ahead of the Knicks’ 15-7. But if the Knicks win, the teams will finish tied and the Knicks will win the pennant on a tie-breaker (having beaten the Warriors twice). The Knicks cannot finish lower than second since they also hold the tiebreaker advantage over the Bulls (30 runs to 25).
#3 BULLS AT #8 CAVALIERS
The Bulls will finish third. They can’t catch the Knicks because of the tiebreaker and they beat the Pacers on a tiebreaker. They will play the 14th place team in the tournament.
The Cavaliers can finish as high as fifth and as low as ninth (depending on what the three teams behind them do).
#16 BOBCATS AT #4 PACERS
Bobcats cannot escape last place and will play the #1 team (Warriors or Knicks) on Monday.
The Pacers cannot pass the Bulls because of the tiebreaker. If they lose, there are three teams right behind them with an assortment of tiebreakers (Celtics, Suns and Mavericks).
#5 SUNS AT #9 PISTONS
With a win, the Suns could get into a tie with the Pacers. The Celtics and Mavericks are also part of this group. A loss would drop the Suns into a tie with the Cavaliers.
A win by the Pistons and a loss by the Cavaliers could create some ties for eighth place. The Pistons cannot drop to 12th because they beat the Sixers on a tiebreaker.
#5 MAVERICKS AT #9 T-WOLVES
Mavericks are part of a four-team jumble involving fourth place. Since they lose a tiebreaker with the Cavaliers, they could fall to eighth place.
The T-Wolves can beat the Cavs in a tie, but the Blazers and Pistons make things more complicated. Twelfth place is possible because the Sixers win the tiebreaker with the T-Wolves.
#13 KINGS AT #12 SIXERS
The Kings will end in 13th place. They can’t catch the Sixers, but they can’t be passed by the Wizards or Rockets because they win tiebreakers against both.
The Sixers can finish ahead of the T-Wolves in a two-way tie for 11th place. They cannot end up lower than 12th.
#5 CELTICS AT #9 BLAZERS
Celtics can move up because they have the tie-breaker with the Pacers, but it gets complicated with the Suns and Mavericks. They could drop to 8th because they lose the tiebreaker to the Cavaliers.
The Blazers lose a tie to the Cavaliers, the Sixers and the T-Wolves, but they win a tie with the Pistons. It could get more complicated with multiple-team ties.
#13 WIZARDS AT #15 ROCKETS
The Wizards can pass the Kings (but not on a tiebreaker) and they can only be passed by the Rockets if they lose on Thursday by eight or more runs.
The Rockets cannot finish lower than 15th, but they cannot catch the Kings. Only an eight-run win over the Wizards would give them 14th place.
