Division Two Action

-Terry Yanny, D2 Stat Man, reporting

Diamondbacks win 5th in a row and keep possession of first place!

Royals 13 – Cards 12

The Royals found their way back into the win column by defeating the Cards by a run.  The Cards had a 5 – 0 lead after 1, but the Royals got the bats going and had a 4 run lead going into the 7th.  The Cards mounted a charge in the bottom of the 7th, but came up a run short.  Alan Jackson led the Royals with a 4 for 4 day at the plate.  Four Cards had 3 hits each.  Steve White got the win for the Royals.

Doubles:    Royals: Alan Jackson, Digger Lines, Bob Kearney & Steve White     Cards: Chris Holck, Reno Seculla & Jim Joseph

HR’s:          Cards: Bill Naasz

Rockies 18 – Padres 13

The Rockies pounded the ball and scored in every inning and winning pitcher Ken Semmel held the Padres to 5 runs thru 6 innings, but the Padres scored 8 in the 7th to make a game of it.  Four Rockies players had 3 hits, while 3 Padres players had 3 hits.  Rick Fredieu had a Grand Slam HR for the Rockies.

Doubles:    Rockies: Bob Marano    Padres: Craig Dahlquist

HR’s:          Rockies: Rick Fredieu    Padres: John Long

Reds 11 – Brewers 10

The Brewers out hit the Reds, but Reds took advantage of the Brewers having only 10 players on defense.  The Brewers had a 9 – 8 lead going into the 7th, but the top of the Reds order found the big hole in the outfield with back to back triples and a HR to take a 2 run lead.  The Brewers got things going in the bottom of the 7th, but came up a run short.  John Ashby was the winning pitcher for the Reds.  Terry Yanny & Mike Hyott led the Reds with 3 hits.  David Blandford, Terry Dolasinski, Tom Montgomery & Gary Arnold had 3 hits each for the Brewers.

Doubles:    Reds: Mike Hyott & Andy Deluise

Triples:      Reds:  Denis Hodge, Terry Yanny (2), Mike Hyott & Andy Deluise

HR’s:          Reds: Ray Donovan    Brewers:  David Blandford

Marlins 7 – Pirates 5

The Marlins found the win column in a tough victory over the Pirates.  Winning pitcher Bob Fleming held the Pirates to 11 hits and the difference in the game may have been the 2 Pirates errors in the 3rd inning that ended up scoring.  Four Marlins players had 2 hits each, while three Pirates players had 2 hits each.

Triples:      Marlins:  Gary Brisco & Grant Barthels

Cubs 13 – Phillies 7

The Cubs held a 9 – 6 lead thru 5, then added 4 in the top of the 7th and winning pitcher Steve White held the Phillies to 1 run in the 7th for the Cubs win.  Frank LaBarbera & John Weisiger had 3 hits each for the Cubs.  John Reedy led the Phillies with 3 hits.

Doubles:    Cubs: Jerry Nugent

Diamondbacks 9 – Giants 8

The D-Backs held an 8 – 3 lead thru 4 innings, and the Giants came back with 3 in the top of the 5th, but the D-Backs picked up a run in the bottom of the 5th for a 9 – 6 lead.  Neither team scored in the 6th inning and the Giants came to bat in the 7th needing 3 to tie. An error by the D-Backs and a walk put the Giants in striking range, but 2 quick outs left runners on 2nd & 3rd.  Tom Ledoux came thru with a single to drive in both runners and cut the lead to 1 run.  With a runner on 2nd, the D-Backs chose to intentionally walk lead off hitter Billy Pauldine and it turned out to be the right decision as the next batter grounded into a fielders choice to end the game.

Doubles:    Giants: Roger Duncan

Triples:      D-Backs: Al Mahar & RJ Jackson (2)
