Dorothy C. Spence, age 83, of Leesburg, FL, passed away early Thursday, July 21, 2016 at The Villages Hospice House. Dorothy was born in Pelham, Georgia and moved to the Leesburg, Florida area over 60 years ago from her birthplace. She was a homemaker and worked as a school teacher in Georgia before moving to Florida. Dorothy was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Leesburg, and for many years ran their Vacation Bible School Programs at the church. She was a strong Christian who had a heart for children. She volunteered in many capacities at her children’s schools as they were growing up, and was known for going out of her way to make a difference in the lives of the children she encountered. Dorothy’s happiest times were enjoying simple picnics, playing the piano in the evenings, and canning vegetables from her own garden, but above all she was happiest when her husband a Leesburg police officer for over 40 years was home safe with her.
She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years Cleon; daughters – Charissa “Char” (Rick) Johnson of China Grove, North Carolina; and Cheryl Spence of Leesburg; a son – David (Rebekah) Spence of Glen Allen, Virginia; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
