A 78-year-old man was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence after he was spotted driving the wrong way on State Road 44.

A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy saw James Bruce Jennings of Eagles Landing in Leesburg driving a Lincoln Towncar traveling east in the westbound lane of SR44 near its intersection with Morse Boulevard shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday, according to an arrest report. Jennings told a deputy he had consumed three drinks and felt like he was intoxicated, the report indicated. He told the deputy he had “just left the bar down the road.”

Jennings failed field sobriety exercises. During one of the exercises, he told the deputy he could not perform the task because he was too drunk.

He provided breath samples that registered .112 and .110 blood alcohol content.

He was booked at the Sumter County Detention Center. Bond was set at $1,000.
