Driver arrested after leaving scene of accident involving death of motorcyclist

A driver was arrested early Wednesday morning after leaving the scene of an accident in which a motorcyclist was killed in Lafayette County.

Brandon Thomas Peterson, 21, of Mayo was driving a Ford pickup truck northbound on U.S. 27 behind 45-year-old Gordon Stewart Wimberley of Mayo, who was riding a Honda motorcycle without a helmet on, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report. As Wimberley slowed down in preparation for a left turn, Peterson failed to slow down and struck the rear of Wimberley’s motorcycle, causing the motorcyclist to be thrown from his motorcycle, the report stated.

Wimberley was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. Peterson left the scene but was located half a mile from the scene of the crash. He was arrested on a charge of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death and was taken to Lafayette County Jail.

Other charges are pending.
