Driver killed after vehicle plunges into Gulf of Mexico

A dive crew from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office was called in early Saturday morning to assist in the recovery of a pickup truck from the Gulf of Mexico.

The 2007 Ford Ranger pickup ran through a stop sign at a boat ramp on County Road 40 in Levy County and plunged into the water.

The driver – 71-year-old Robert J. O’Keefe of Lamoine, Maine – was pronounced dead by Levy County Fire Rescue, according to an accident report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

The U.S. Coast Guard assisted in confirming the location of the vehicle.
