Driver paralyzed in crash that claimed woman’s life now behind bars on DUI manslaughter charge

A 29-year-old Summerfield man is behind bars on a DUI manslaughter charge after a January crash that claimed the life of a female passenger.

Joshua Andrew Morgan is being held on $50,000 bond following his arrest on multiple warrants.

He was taken into custody Thursday afternoon at the Lake County Jail and transferred Friday to the Marion County Jail.

Morgan had been at the wheel of a speeding stolen 2014 Chrysler 200 in the early morning hours of Jan.13 on Sunset Harbor Road west of SE 115th Avenue when the crash occurred.

Two passengers, 38-year-old Jesus Torres-Flores of Ocala and 37-year-old Violette Rupp of Summerfield, were also in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Torres-Flores was seriously injured and transported to Ocala Regional Medical Center. Rupp died at the scene of the crash.

Morgan was critically injured and is now paralyzed.

No one in the vehicle had been wearing a seatbelt.

The car in which they had been traveling had been reported stolen two days earlier in Marion County.

Morgan is also facing charges of DUI impairment person injury, DUI impairment property damage, grand theft, no valid driver’s license and failure to appear on a charge of driving while license suspended.
