Driver surrenders in fatal hit-and-run accident Oct. 7 in St. Lucie County

A driver has surrendered in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident Oct. 7 in St. Lucie County.

Robert Bates turned himself in to Florida Highway Patrol investigators after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Bates is accused of hitting and killing 24-year-old Vincent T. Mathews from Lakeland and 19- year-old Mariah A. King from Davenport. The couple had been traveling northbound on the Florida Turnpike near mile marker 166 when their vehicle sustained a flat tire. They pulled off the roadway onto the paved shoulder and were attempting to change the tire when they struck by a northbound tractor trailer. Bates has been charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death.
