A Wildwood man was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence Thursday afternoon and the small dog riding with him was turned over to animal control.

A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy was alerted by a witness who saw a van driving erratically at about 4 p.m. Thursday at a shopping center at 316 Shopping Center Drive in Wildwood.

When the deputy approached the driver, 62-year-old John Mayer Thompson of Wildwood, the deputy noted a strong odor of alcohol, according to the arrest report. Thompson told the deputy he was diabetic.

Sumter County Fire Rescue Engine 31 and EMS responded to the scene and conducted a blood sugar test and found Thompson’s blood sugar to be normal.

Thompson then failed field sobriety exercises.

Thompson was transported to the Sumter County Detention Center. Once there, he provided two breath samples registering blood alcohol content of .110 and .112.

Bond was set at $1,000.

He had a small dog with him in the vehicle, and the dog was turned over to animal control.
