Drunk driver arrested in death of Ohio motorcyclist

A man driving without his license was arrested in the death of an Ohio man Tuesday afternoon in Hillsborough County.

Jorge Alberto Mejia Perez, 52, of Plant City was driving a 2000 Nissan Maxima westbound on Knights Griffin Road approaching State Road 39, when 74-year-old Robert Eugene Shook, of New Matamoras, Ohio, was riding a 1990 Honda motorcycle northbound on SR-39 approaching Knights Griffin Road, according to a Florida Highway Patrol accident report. Perez failed to stop at a red traffic signal, entered the intersection of the two roadways and into the path of Shook’s motorcycle, causing both vehicles to collide, the report stated. Following the arrival of EMS person and FHP Corporal Neil Browning, Perez began to flee the scene of the crash on foot. Corporal Browning chased Perez on foot and then apprehended him.

Shook was transported to Lakeland Regional where he died from his injuries. Perez was later charged with driving under the influence manslaughter, leaving the scene of a crash involving  death and driving with no license involving death.
