FHP report indicates teen was legally drunk at time of fatal crash

An 18-year-old had alcohol and marijuana in his system when he was behind the wheel in a high-speed crash in February near his Summerfield home.

Codey Benoit, a student at Belleview High School, suffered critical injuries and later died at Orlando Regional Medical Center after he was taken off life support.

The crash occurred at 1 a.m. Feb. 22. Benoit’s 14-year-old brother Travis was also seriously injured in the accident.

A toxicology report released this week by the Florida Highway Patrol indicated that Codey Benoit  had a blood alcohol content of .112. He also tested positive for THC, a chemical in marijuana, and benzodiazepines, a class of psychoactive drug.

The FHP report indicated he had been driving at an estimated speed of 80 mph. The posted speed limit on the narrow, two-lane road is 30 mph.

Benoit was a senior at Belleview High School and is being described as well liked by friends. He is said to have enjoyed riding dirt bikes and BMX bikes.
