Fruitland Park leaders ditch golf cart registration in advance of Villages construction

Fruitland Park leaders have decided to repeal their golf cart registration rule enacted last year.

Only about $500 in registration fees have been collected since the ordinance went into effect.

In large part, it is because of the anticipated Villages development.

The Villages wanted no part of Fruitland Park’s golf cart regulations. City leaders determined it would be unfair to have one set of rules for the Villages of Fruitland Park and and another set of rules for the “old” Fruitland Park.

Meanwhile, Fruitland Park’s new City Manager Gary La Venia wants to develop a marketing piece to “sell the city of Fruitland Park.”

“When the Villages moves in, other people are going to come, too,” La Venia told commissioners at Thursday’s commission meeting.

The cost of the piece to be distributed by mail and in public places is $3,750.

The piece would also be available to commercial entities looking at locating in Fruitland Park.

“We get calls every week from commercial entities looking at parcles along 466A and other areas,” La Venia said. “We want to sell these people.”
