Fruitland Park man arrested after shooting himself in right calf with .22-caliber weapon

Kelvin Bernard Lewis

A 27-year-old Fruitland Park man was arrested after shooting himself in the right calf with a .22-caliber weapon.

Kelvin Bernard Lewis was treated for the wound at Ocala Regional Medical Center and then booked Wednesday at the Lake County Jail.

Lewis had gone at about 6 a.m. that morning to his mother’s apartment on Mirror Lake Drive in Fruitland Park. He woke up his mother, but because he is a convicted felon and cannot possess a weapon, he attempted to conceal the gun which discharged when he tried to stick it in his waistband, according to an arrest report from the Fruitland Park Police Department.

When Lewis arrived at the hospital, an extra magazine for the firearm with approximately seven rounds was found in his belongings.

He was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a felon. He is also charged with violating his probation.

He was booked without bond at the Lake County Jail.
