Golf cart stolen, other golf carts burglarized during Sunday service at church in The Villages

A golf cart was stolen and three other golf carts were burglarized during a Sunday morning services at a church in The Villages.

A woman arrived at 7:30 a.m. at New Covenant United Methodist Church on Woodridge Drive and parked her 2001 Club Car golf cart in the first row on the southwest side of the parking lot and went inside for the service. When she came out at 8:50 a.m., her golf cart was gone.

In addition, three golf carts were burglarized:

• The owner of a 2011 Yamaha golf cart came out of the church at 8:50 a.m. and found that a wireless speaker, sunglasses, a Shell gas rewards car, a pack of Backwoods Cigars and keys on a key ring had been removed from the cart.

• Keys had been removed from a red Yamaha golf cart.

• Another attendee at the 7:30 a.m. service emerged to find that  her purse had been taken from her gray Club Car golf cart. The purse had contained an iPhone 5, Villages ID card, her Villages gate card and credit cards.

A Sumter County sheriff’s deputy spotted two juveniles, ages 14 and 17, riding through the parking lot in the stolen 2001 Club Car golf cart. Deputies stopped the golf cart at Southern Trace and Wedgewood Lane. Two small marijuana roaches were discovered in the cupholder of the golf cart.

The owner identified the golf cart and pointed out it had suffered scratches when the thieves drove it through the woods. Both headlights were also damaged.

The juveniles were taken into custody by deputies.
