Hearts for our Hospital Big Bike Weekend offers rides for bicyclists of all levels

If you haven’t signed up for the Hearts for our Hospital Big Bike Weekend coming up this weekend, Friday, Nov. 10 and Saturday, Nov. 11, it is not too late. This annual event, a major fundraiser for The Villages Regional Hospital Auxiliary Foundation, has added some exciting new features this year.

“This is a fun event all around and we raise money in the process,” said event co-chair Pat Gillis.

There is something for everyone this year. A 10-mile Fun Ride has been added to the traditional 17, 32, 64 and 100 mile routes.

“We continue to stress this is a ride not a race,” said Gillis, “safety is preeminent.”  The folks participating in the Fun Ride will have a leader and sweeper keeping them on the right route. Another change is straightening out the 100 mile route.

“We got feedback last year from the 100 milers that the route was too choppy,” said Gillis, “and we listened.” This year the 100 and 64 mile routes have less turns and head straight out toward Bushnell, Center Hill and Webster with a route designed to allow riders to maintain their desired pace.

“This year the after-party is going to have a lot more pizazz,” said Gillis. The ride will take off and finish from La Hacienda Recreation Center. A post-ride lunch, ice cream, biergarten, door prizes and music awaits riders at the finish.

The Cycling Expo on Friday, Nov. 10 will feature thirty exhibitors with the latest in bicycles, bicycle technology and accessories, bicycle tours, and health related exhibits.

To register and get more information about the weekend’s events including the Sumter Landing Bicycle Club free ride on Sunday, Nov.12 by going to www.H4HBikeWeekend.com. Riders can register at the Expo and on ride day at 7 a.m.
