High-risk Rolling Acres Road intersection getting a makeover aimed at safety

Crews are scheduled to finish their work Friday on improvements at a dangerous intersection on Rolling Acres Road.

The improvements are being made at the intersection with both the Village Crossroads and Rolling Acres Plaza driveway, said William K. White, and engineer with the Lake County Public Works Department.

Impatience and risk-taking have been common at the intersection for years. That behavior, particularly in the height of snowbird season, has resulted in numerous accidents at the intersection.

“The improvement is based on an intersection analysis previously conducted following concerns expressed by local residents regarding safety and congestion,” White said.

The improvements are designed to alleviate congestion at the driveway intersections by installation of a bi-directional left turn lane median to eliminate the existing through and left turn movements from the driveways on to Rolling Acres Road, he said.

The motorists wishing to exit and make a through or left turn movement will now be routed internally to either the southern driveway for Village Crossroads or to the U.S. Hwy. 27/441 exit for Rolling Acres Plaza.
