Highs and lows of ponds in The Villages to be explained in upcoming workshops

The District Office is organizing a pair of workshops on storm water management in response to residents’ concerns about ponds near their homes.

District Manager Janet Tutt has expressed the need to educate residents about how the storm water management systems work in The Villages.

Some point to Hurricane Irma as a testament to the value of the retention ponds located throughout neighborhoods and golf courses.

“They performed exactly as they were supposed to,” Community Development District 8 Supervisor Dennis Hayes said in the wake of Hurricane Irma.

While golf courses may have flooded, the water stayed out of homes.

Many ponds, and Lake Sumter, are still brimming with water thanks to rain from Irma.

But during times of drought, residents can get angry.

For example, in 2015, residents of the Village of Dunedin who paid a premium for their lots near a pond at Anna Maria Avenue and Reading Road were outraged when the pond’s membrane popped and floated to the top. The pond was also covered with algae.

The membrane of this pond in the Village of Dunedin was visible at the surface in 2015.

Last year, a CDD supervisor prodded Tutt to expedite the presentation on the ponds.

The Storm Water Management Workshops will be offered:
• At 3 p.m. Feb. 26 at the Rohan Regional Recreation Center
• At 3 p.m. March 2 at the Savannah Center
Both workshops will provide identical information.
