Thirty-five World War II veterans and their Guardians completed a whirlwind trip Thursday on Villages Honor Flight.
Their day-long journey to see the war memorials in Washington D.C. marked the 500th veteran traveling on Villages Honor Flight.
After touching down at the Baltimore airport, the Honor Flight group traveled by bus to the Tomb of the Unknowns where they viewed the solemn ritual of methodically moving soldiers. They also visited the grave of Audie Murphy, one of the most decorated American combat soldiers of World War II. The Texan went on to star in more than 40 feature films.
In addition to seeing the war memorials, the veterans and their Guardians visited classic Washington D.C. sites including the Lincoln Memorial.
The group touched down Thursday night at Orlando International Airport where they were serenaded by bagpipes. They arrived back to a heroes’ welcome at American Legion Post 347 in Lady Lake.
The trip also marked a first with Village of Polo Ridge resident Barb Cooksey serving as flight director.
