Hundreds of fish have died in a storm water retention pond located near the Village of Duval gate.
The dead fish include large-mouth bass and blue gills. Vultures were at the pond, looking for the opportunity to feed on the dead fish.
Personnel from Villages Community Development District had reportedly visited the site Thursday inspecting the situation.
“At this time the exact cause is unknown; however, this type of event can occur from temperature inversion, a rain event pulling the oxygen from the water and, of course, fertilizer/pesticide or some other type of runoff,” the District said in a message to residents. “Unfortunately, fish kills are not uncommon in Florida and the causes are varied.”
