Karen Dee Kerr

Karen Kerr of Leesburg, FL, passed away on October 11, 2017.

Since 1978 she communicated her great love of nature by creating original stained glass panels and free forms of natural subjects, many of which would be found near or in the ocean. She used the texture, color, density and flow of the glass in her simple but elegant designs. People from all over the world purchased her artwork. Since the 1980’s she had been working in the arts in fiber design wall hangings and stained glass, most recently stained glass and glass bead designs.

Karen’s artwork is still being sold in Florida at Wild Side Gallery-Key West, Sanibel’s Finest, Sanibel Island, Florida Shell Shop, Treasure Island, Roy’s Restaurant, Steinhatchee Artisans, St. Armand’s Circle, and at Magnolia’s Antiques, Southport, NC. In the past, she had her artwork in five different states and eighteen galleries and fine gift shops.

She has a BS in Physical Education from Indiana University, 70 graduate hours in Physical Education and Dance from Ohio State University and others. Karen was involved as a dance teacher in the early 70’s in a national program called Arts Impact in Columbus, OH. She team taught art, music, dance and drama with the classroom teachers in elementary schools to make school more interesting. She and others received in-service training as teachers and experienced seeing and working with nationally known artists, dancers, musicians and actors. She attended several national stained glass conferences.

Karen is survived by her sister Jane and husband Rick Huggins; three nephews and two nieces; and her best friend, employee and caregiver, Mira P. Cox. Everyone who met Karen loved her.

No services are planned at this time, but she will be cremated and her ashes taken to Naples, FL. A service will be held on a boat in the Gulf and her ashes will be distributed with daisies, her favorite flower. She always loved Naples and the beach.
