A 32-year-old former Kohl’s clerk will avoid prosecution on a felony charge for allegedly stealing from the store’s cash register.
Amanda Carroll Burgess, who was living in The Villages at the time of her arrest, agreed this past week to a pre-trial intervention contract.
At the time of her arrest in December, Burgess had been working as a cashier at Kohl’s when she allegedly took $150 from the store’s cash register between Oct. 2 and Nov. 19. She took the money in increments of $10, $20 and $50, according to an arrest report from the Lady Lake Police Department. She is also accused of taking $64.17 in store merchandise.
When questioned by police, Burgess said she knew what she was doing. She told police she was on the verge of losing her house to bankruptcy and needed food so she decided to take the money.
If Burgess successfully completes the pre-trial intervention program, the case will be dismissed.
