Lake County commissioners say they won’t follow Sumter County to larger, urban MPO

Lake County commissioners have indicated that they will not follow Sumter County in its potential merger with MetroPlan, a Central Florida Metropolitan Planning Organization that covers Orlando, Osceola and Seminole counties.

Sumter County commissioners, in particular Commission Chairman Doug Gilpin, have expressed their displeasure with how the Lake-Sumter Metropolitan Planning Organization is being run and have threatened to walk away.

Last week, Lake County commissioners discussed Sumter County’s move. Lake County commissioners said they would prefer to stick with the MPO, but indicated they were open to Sumter County’s demand to restructure it to give Sumter County a greater voice.

Also last week, the Lady Lake Commission agreed it would prefer to stick with the current MPO arrangement.
