Law enforcement seeking car that fled scene after Summerfield woman struck and killed on U.S. 301

The Florida Highway Patrol is seeking information about a vehicle that struck and killed a 43-year-old Summerfield woman early Tuesday morning on U.S. 301 near Brown’s Country Market.

Alexis Monroe appeared to have been walking south in the right lane of U.S. 301 at about 2 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle that fled the scene, according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Marion County Fire Rescue.

Two vehicles – a freight truck driven by 64-year-old John Gandy of Orlando and a 2003 Toyota Tundra driven by 44-year-old Timothy Barhost of Summerfield – had been traveling behind the vehicle that hit Monroe and stopped at the scene, the FHP report indicated.

The vehicle that fled the scene is possibly gray or silver in color. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to contact Cpl. Lattinville at (352) 732-1260, Ext. 236.
