Layton Bassett

Layton Bassett, age 81, of The Villages, FL, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 20, 2017. He was born in Philadelphia, MS on November 6, 1935. Layton retired from the US Navy as a Master Chief after serving a distinguished 30 year career, 26 years as a Navy Seal, finishing at the Naval Coastal Systems Command in Panama City, FL.

He is survived by his wife Vickie Lee Bassett of The Villages, FL; son James Edward Bassett and his wife Debbie of Falls City, NE; daughters Kimberly Ann Warner of Middleburg, FL and Beverly Bentley and her husband The Reverend Mike Bentley of Collins, MS; step son Michael Pankey and his wife Mia of Lynn Haven, FL; 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents John Thomas Bassett and Hattie Dale Bassett; sons Layton Beall Bassett, Jr and John Rezon Bassett.

Visitation will take place at McClain-Hayes Funeral Services, Philadelphia, MS on Wednesday, April 26, 2017 from 5 – 7 pm. A celebration of life will also take place at the funeral home on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 1 p.m. Burial will take place at New Pearl Valley Cemetery, Arlington, MS.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675 in memory of Layton Bassett.
