Leaders in The Villages LGBT community are cheering the U.S. Supreme Court’s Friday ruling which has cleared the path for same-sex couples to marry in Florida next year.
“Finally the Supreme Court has stepped up and done the right thing for Florida. We are thrilled that Florida same-sex couples will be able to marry after Jan. 5, 2015. We celebrate this day as the culmination of a long and arduous battle for our civil rights, Villagers Peggy Garvin and Wendy O’Donnell, co-chairs of The Villages Rainbow Family and Friends, said in a statement.
Churches in the area have already expressed a willingness to perform same-sex marriages.

Garvin and O’Donnell who were united 22 years ago in a Holy union in a Metropolitan Community Church ceremony in San Diego, said they will wait until their anniversary on Nov. 7, 2015 to marry in Florida.
