Residents around Madero Drive, between Sansores Street and Salido Avenue in the Village of Santo Domingo reported a foul odor around 5:30 p.m. Monday. Justin Corbier, of the Water Department/CH2M Hill and his crew were on the scene fixing a ruptured underground sewer line which was leaking raw sewage onto the road.

“Lightning struck this tree here,” Corbier said, pointing to a large live oak tree near a villa wall on Madero Drive, “and it broke the pipe.”

A crew member explained: “This is a sewer line, not a water line, so drinking water will not be affected. Residents will NOT need to boil water.”

According to Corbier, they had the situation well under control and will be able to contain the spill to avoid contaminating ground water.
